Before AI Recommends a Local Business, It Looks for One Thing: Reviews
When we watched what AI engines actually search for, one thing came up more than anything else. It wasn't your website. It was your reviews.
We spent a lot of time watching what AI engines actually search for in the moment a buyer asks them to recommend a local business. We expected a mix of things. Instead, one category towered over everything else: reviews and reputation.
Other research lines up with this. Across tens of thousands of citations, the majority of what AI cites for branded local questions points to reviews, listicles, and reputation pages rather than to plain company sites. There is a catch most owners miss: freshness. Roughly 74% of consumers want to see reviews from the last three months. Source: BrightLocal, 2026. A wall of five-star reviews from two years ago does far less for you than a steady trickle of recent ones.
What to do
- Make review requests a routine, not an afterthought. Ask every satisfied customer, every week.
- Spread reviews across the profiles AI trusts for your trade, not just one site.
- Show the rating with its count. "4.9 stars across 180 reviews" carries more weight than "4.9 stars" alone.
- Respond to reviews, good and bad. It signals an active, real business.
If you do one thing this month, make it this. It is the single strongest signal you control.
