Your Google Reviews Are Great. So Why Doesn't AI Recommend You?

A strong Google presence no longer guarantees AI recommends you. Here's the gap between Google and AI search, and how to close it.

You have spent years earning 200 five-star Google reviews. You rank on page one for your trade and your city. So it is a shock to type your own question into ChatGPT and watch it recommend three other businesses, none of them you.

You are not doing anything wrong. AI search and Google search are two different systems, and winning one does not win the other.

Why the gap exists

When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, it does not show ten links. It names a few businesses and moves on. Right now ChatGPT recommends only about 1.2% of local businesses, which means roughly 98.8% are simply invisible in that moment. Source: SOCi, 2026.

The AI engines do not even agree with each other. Being recommended by ChatGPT does not mean Gemini recommends you, because they pull from different places. Being in one is not being in all.

The good news

A study of 6.8 million AI citations found that 86% of what AI cites comes from brand-managed sources: your own website and your business listings. Source: Yext, 2026. The things AI relies on are largely things you can claim and improve.

How to close the gap

Own your website's answers, spell out your services, pricing, and service areas in plain language. Own your profiles and keep them consistent. Keep reviews fresh. And check all the engines, not just one, because each weighs sources differently.
