Are Free GEO Scans Trustworthy? Here's What We Found When We Tested Them
Free AI visibility scans are fast and cheap. But are they accurate? Our research shows why running a scan once or twice can badly mislead you.
Short answer: a free GEO scan that checks your business once or twice will hand you a number, and there is a good chance that number is wrong. Not because the people behind it are dishonest, but because AI answers move around a lot, and you cannot catch a moving target with a single photograph.
Why a single run lies to you
Ask an AI assistant the same question twice and you can get two different sets of names. Industry analyses have found that between 40 and 60 percent of who gets recommended can change from one month to the next. Source: Semrush, 2026. So a scan that asks once is reading random noise and presenting it as a stable score.
What we do instead
We run at least ten carefully built prompts, and we run each of them at least ten times. Then we look at what shows up again and again. Repeating the test is the only way to tell a real pattern from a lucky or unlucky single answer.
There's a second trap: counting the wrong thing
A lot of what an AI touches while it works never makes it into the answer your customer sees. It searches around, glances at pages, and quietly throws most of them out. A cheap tool that counts everything the model looked at will tell you a very different story from what is actually being recommended.
What trustworthy measurement looks like
Repeated runs, not a single snapshot. Prompts written by people and tailored to your sector. The same test over time, so you can see real movement. And plain honesty about the margin of error. That is the difference between a number and an answer.
